Adult Health
The Department of Health & Human Services' Adult Health program provides screening and preventive services which includes physicals, immunizations and limited laboratory testing.
Baby LINKS
Our Baby LINKS program provides skilled nursing assessments for postpartum mothers and newborns and ‘Links’ new mothers in Dare County to available support services while providing all new parents with parenting education and information.
Breast & Cervical Cancer Control
Through the North Carolina Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) we are able to provide free or low cost breast and cervical cancer screening and follow-up services to qualified women between the ages of 21-64, with an emphasis on women over 50.
Body Composition Measurements
Using methods such as percent body fat, body mass index (BMI), and circumference measurements are good alternatives to just using the scale as a measure of your body composition. The Virginia S. Tillett Community Center offers free body composition measurements so you can track and quantify the success of your exercise achievements in a different way.
Care Management Services
Dare County Health & Human Services nurse case managers collaborate with primary care providers to respond to referrals from hospitals, other healthcare entities, and self-referrals.
Care Coordination for Children
Our CC4C program works to improve your child’s care by linking you to services that will meet the specific needs of your child and family. Care Coordination for Children (CC4C) is offered at no charge for children birth to five years of age.
Child Health
The Department of Health & Human Services Child Health program provides preventative health services, physical and developmental assessments to identify and minimize potential health risks for infants and children.
Children's Dental Van - Miles of Smiles
The Miles of Smiles Dental Van service offers easier access to dental care for children of Dare County. The mobile van meets patients where they are—at school. The Miles of Smiles van works with your child to create a stress free environment while promoting good oral health.
Children's Environmental Health
The Department of Health & Human Services Children's Environmental Health Program supports several programs for the protection of children's health. Our Environmental Health Specialists inspects the establishments such as school cafeterias and buildings, daycares, residential care and foster family homes.
The Communicable Disease Program provides surveillance and tracking of all reportable diseases and emerging health threats.
Diabetes Education Program
Our Diabetes Education Program offers training for people with diabetes. Services include an assessment by a registered nurse and/or registered dietitian, and up to nine hours of group education.
Diabetes Prevention Program Prevent T2
Our Prevent T2 class is a diabetes prevention program offered by trained lifestyle coaches utilizing the Center for Disease Prevention & Control's curriculum.
Fitness Assessments
Staff at the Virginia S. Tillett Community Center can measure your current fitness level through various exercise assessments, discuss your fitness behaviors and goals, and also help you create a fitness plan to meet your individual needs.
Food & Nutrition Services
Food & Nutrition Services helps low-income families or individuals buy food. Families must meet income, resource, citizenship, and work rules. Eligible households receive monthly benefits on a debit card allowing them to purchase approved food items.
Health Check
Our Health Check services improve access to care by assisting families with children through age 19 in obtaining health insurance coverage, periodic well child checkups, specialized medical services, dental care, age appropriate immunizations and transportation.
Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks
The Healthy Carolinians process supports our community in mobilizing people and resources to address community health challenges.
Immunizations
Our Immunization Program promotes public health through the elimination of vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio, hepatitis B, measles, chicken pox, whooping cough, tetanus, rubella (German measles), and mumps.
Keeping Current
Keeping Current is an interactive program designed to empower and equip adults with the tools necessary to prevent teen substance abuse. The program is designed for all adults who spend time with teens and young adults. Participants begin by touring a "typical teenage bedroom" with various items hidden in plain site that could indicate substance use. Keeping Current educates adults on topics such as protective factors, communicating with teens, when to be concerned, and where to turn for help.
Maternal Health Services
Our Maternal Health program targets uninsured and underinsured pregnant women to prevent maternal and infant morbidity and mortality through early and consistent access to prenatal and postpartum care.
Nutrition Services and Home Delivered Meals
In partnership with the Albemarle Commission, Dare County is able to offer older adults who are at least 60 years of age with a nutritionally balanced meal five days per week served in a congregate group setting, or delivered to the home.
Peer Power
Peer Power is a peer health education program where high school students are trained as health educators to positively influence elementary and middle school student’s health behaviors related to: nutrition, physical activity, alcohol, tobacco, and other drug usage.
Physicals & Health Assessments
Health assessments are conducted to make sure that your child is healthy, ready to learn, and is up-to-date on his/her vaccinations. Sports physical are conducted to identify medical or musculoskeletal conditions that might make participation in a particular sport unsafe, to screen for any previously undetected health problem, and to assure that any previous injuries have been adequately rehabilitated so that the athlete is not at risk for further injury.
Pregnancy Care Management (PCM)
Our PCM program is a support program that focuses on helping pregnant women access health care services and resources.
School Health Nursing
Our department provides health services to Dare County Public School students by stationing public health nurses in each school. We are proud to provide services that includes screening, evaluation, treatment, health education and case management for students with chronic diseases and/or other special health care needs.
Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program
The Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) was created by the North Carolina Department of Insurance to help senior citizens obtain free and unbiased counseling on Medicare health care products.
Tobacco Cessation
We are proud to offer the American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking® (FFS) program for adults who are ready to quit smoking.
Women, Infants & Children (WIC)
Women, Infants & Children (WIC) is a nutrition program that provides healthy foods for you and your family. WIC is available for: women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or recently had a baby; infants from birth to one year of age; and children from one year of age to their fifth birthday.
Women’s Health & Family Planning
Our Family Planning Services Include routine annual visits for women’s health, STD screenings and treatment; breast and cervical cancer screenings, contraceptive & birth control options, and pregnancy testing.
