The Dare County Public Works Department's large item pickup for the unincorporated areas of Dare County, which began on Monday, March 18, 2024, has been completed.

The large item pickup was be performed by a private contractor, Southern Disaster Recovery, and there was a strict one pass only enforced due to budgetary and time constraints.

This one pass only large item pickup took place in unincorporated areas of Dare County, which includes the following communities:

• Martin’s Point
• Colington Island - (inside and outside the gated community) 
• Roanoke Island - (unincorporated areas of Manteo, as well as Wanchese, Skyco and Mashoes)
• Mainland Dare County (East Lake, Stumpy Point and Manns Harbor) 
• Hatteras Island (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras)

• Materials must be at curbside no later than 6 a.m. on the date of collection.  There will not be a second day pickup.

• Please do not interfere with county employees picking up large items. 

• If large item pickup falls on your regular garbage collection day, please do not block the garbage container.

• Be mindful of overhead power lines and try to place items in such a way that collection trucks will not be in danger of coming in contact with them.

• Do not stack or lean items on fire hydrants, water meters, mailboxes or other structures that would make collection and access to these essential services difficult.

• Please do not place items for the Dare County large item pickup at the roadside until the day before your pickup will be held. If the county does not take an item(s) you placed on the roadside, it has been rejected and must be disposed of at your expense. 

• Take pride in your home and respect your neighbors. Do not leave trash at the roadside expecting it to be picked up.

• Used auto tires
• Auto radiators
• Scrap metals (rims, motor parts)
• Appliances (please remove the doors from refrigerators)
• Furniture
• Mattresses
• Box springs
• Water-based paint can be picked up but must be dried out

All items must be sorted into separate piles based on their type.

The following items will not be collected: 

• Motor oil 
• Old clothes
• Shoes
• Cardboard, etc.
• Tree limbs
• Stumps
• Leaves
• Any yard-clearing debris
• Construction/demolition materials such as lumber, toilets, windows, doors, etc.
• Any hazardous materials (oil-based paint, pesticides, etc.)
• All normal household garbage must be disposed of in your regular trash can.
