Animal Adoption

Consider adopting a homeless pet! A FURever friend for you and your family is waiting for you at the Dare County Animal Shelter.

Animal Control/Shelter

Staff of Dare County Animal Control and the Dare County Animal Shelter are concerned with the welfare of all animals, domestic, feral or wild. They are responsibile for investigating animal cruelty, animal nuisance complaints, and animal bites. They also provide rabies control measures and advocate humane education. 

Dog License

Section 91.025 of the County of Dare Code of Ordinances requires all dog owners to obtain a County dog license for the current calendar year, and keep it securely attached with the current rabies tag to the dog collar or harness.

Dog Parks

The Northern Beach Division of Parks & Recreation oversees the Kitty Hawk Dog Park. The Kitty Hawk Dog Park is open to all residents and visitors of Dare County. In order to receive the keycode for entrance and exit through the gate at the Kitty Hawk Dog Park, dog owners are required to complete the Kitty Hawk Dog Park Application and bring the completed application with a current rabies certificate to the Parks and Recreation Northern Beach Division Office located at 602 Mustian St. Kill Devil Hills for each dog. Please review the entire application, responsibility and liability release statement, dog park rules and guidelines before completing the application. Occasionally, the keycode will be changed and owners will be required to submit an updated rabies vaccination certificate in order to be granted access. 

The Roanoke Island / Mainland Division of Parks & Recreation oversees the Roanoke Island Dog Park. The Roanoke Island Dog Park is open to all residents and visitors of Dare County. In order to receive the key code for entrance and exit through the gate at the Roanoke Island Dog Park, dog owners are required to complete the Roanoke Island Dog Park Application bring the completed application and a rabies certificate (for each dog) to the Dare County Parks and Recreation Roanoke Island / Mainland Division Office located at 1000 Wescott Park Road, Manteo. Please review the entire application, responsibility and liability release statement, dog park rules and guidelines before completing and signing the application. Occasionally, the key code will be changed and owners will be required to submit an updated rabies vaccination certificate in order to be granted access.
