North Carolina Reads is North Carolina Humanities’ award-winning, virtual statewide book club! North Carolina Reads annually features five books that explore issues of racial, social, and gender equity and the history and culture of North Carolina. All featured books pose critical questions about how North Carolinians view their personal roles in helping to promote and form a more just and inclusive society.

The Dare County Library's Adult Speakers Series 

We offer in-person, virtual, and hybrid programs in order to provide better access and accommodation for more patrons. Most programs will be held in the Kill Devil Hills Library meeting room, unless otherwise indicated. Please see below for a schedule and information about all scheduled presentations. 

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is required for both in-person and virtual attendance due to space limitations in our meeting rooms. If in-person registrations for an event fill up, the event will become virtual-only, and names will be taken for a waitlist should any in-person registrants cancel.

Online registration closes one (1) hour prior to the event. Once registration has closed, you may call the Kill Devil Hills Library at 252.441.4331 to register until the event starts, if a space is available. 

Within 24 hours of the event, look for an email from updates@info.darecountync.gov with confirmation of your attendance and, if you will be attending virtually, a link to the meeting via Zoom.

We are very excited to announce the launch of our Book Club in a Bag Kits. These kits contain 12 copies of a book, a book assignment tracker, discussion questions, and additional resources about the book. The books cover a broad range of fiction and non-fiction. Whether you’re just starting a book club or looking for something new for an existing club, this Kit is just the thing! 

General Information:

• A representative may check out one Book Club in a Bag kit at a time. That person is responsible for all twelve (12) copies in the set. A Liability Waiver must be signed and will be kept on file while the set is checked out.  
• Sets must be reserved in-person or via phone call; they cannot be reserved through the online catalog. Sets may be reserved up to twelve (12) months in advance. Contacts to reserve sets at each library are below. 
• Sets may be checked out for thirty (30) days. There is a seven (7) day turnaround between a set being returned and available to check out to the next hold request. 
• The Book Club in a Bag kit must be returned, in its entirety (all copies of the book, the bag, and the attached barcode), to a Dare County Library. Please DO NOT put it in the book drop.
• Please return the books in the same condition that you received them. Charges for lost or damaged books will be assessed when the set is returned.

Kill Devil Hills Library Book Club: 

Meets the second Tuesday of most months from 4:15-5:15 p.m. (We do not meet June, July, August, or December).

Meets the second Thursday of most months from 4:00-5:00 p.m. (We do not meet June, July, August, or December).

Hatteras Library Book Club: 

Meets the third Friday of the month from 4:00-5:00 p.m. 

Gather your favorite reads and come to the Hatteras Library on the third Friday of the month from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., for a fun and friendly new book club, the Book Drop!

This drop-in book club is open to everyone. Come ready to talk about books you love and find out what others are reading. There are no obligations, and there will be an open discussion and an opportunity to talk books in a laidback atmosphere.

A new knitting and crochet group at the Kill Devil Hills Library!  All skill levels are welcome.  Bring your projects and supplies and we'll have a great time.  Not sure what you need or need help with a project? We can help with that.  We even have a lefty on hand for any southpaw crafters.  

Knit Knights meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The Dare County Library's Library Speakers Consortium showcases a virtual author talk series each month featuring bestselling, award-winning, and highly acclaimed authors from around the world. The featured writers and thought leaders will cover a wide range of fiction and nonfiction genres.

All from the convenience of your device - you can log into to watch these events wherever you are - no trips to the library necessary.
