The Dare County Public Works Department's Sanitation Division provides residential and commercial solid waste collectionfor all areas of unincorporated Dare County, as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk. Solid waste is collected and transported to the Manns Harbor Transfer Station and then transported to Bertie County for final disposition.
This department also provides residents of the unincorporated areas of Dare County with a large item pickup, which is held once a year. This service helps residents dispose of furniture and white goods not picked up during regular sanitation service.
Please note that Dare County Public Works only provides services to the unincorporated areas of Dare County and the Town of Kitty Hawk. If your property is located within the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head or Manteo, please contact your local town officials for information regarding residential and commercial solid waste collection services.
New Trash Cans:
Dare County residents may purchase a new trash can through the Dare County Public Works Department. Checks, debit cards and major credit cards are accepted. To place an order for a new trash can, please call 252-475-5895. The cost to have a new trash can delivered to your property is $96.08. Trash cans are available for pick up at 1018 Driftwood Drive, Manteo for $85.40.The trash cans that are sold by the Dare County Public Work's Department's sanitation division come with a ten-year warranty. During this ten-year warranty period if the trash can is damaged by the sanitation truck it will be replaced or repaired at no cost by Dare County. Beyond the ten year warranty period, homeowners may buy replacement parts through the Dare County Public Works Department.
If a Dare County resident places a trash can at curbside for collection that was not purchased through the Dare County Public Works Department and it is damaged or dropped into the back of the trash truck, it will be the resident's responsibility to replace or repair the trash at their own cost. Dare County is not liable for trash cans that were not purchased from the Dare County Public Works Department.
Depending on the age of the trash can, replacement parts may be available for purchase. Call our helpful staff to determine if the can will be able to be repaired or if a new can will need to be purchased.
Bear-Resistant Trash Cans:
A limited supply of bear-resistant trash cans are available for the same purchase price as regular cans. A locking mechanism allows containers to be easily opened by humans using one hand but prevents bears from opening with claws, paws and teeth.
