Due to the high number of hurricanes that frequently affect Dare County, residents should not only have an emergency plan for disasters that may occur without warning but also a plan for handling hurricane evacuations. Evacuation plans should include what evacuation route you will take, what vehicles you will use and where you will stay. While preparing your family's emergency plan, don't forget to also make a plan for your pets. Remember that if it's not safe for you and your family during a storm, it's also not safe for your pets.
Do you have a plan in place in case communication lines and/or cell phone towers fail?
When cell phone networks are overloaded, texts and social media posts are more unlikely to make it through. Designate a meeting area and a backup meeting location for your family. Make plans to check in with a designated family member or friend who lives in a different area. When local networks are jammed, long-distance calls may not go through.
