The Dare County Board of Elections will hold meetings at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and Thursday, Dec. 10 to conduct a hand-to-eye count of ballots in the race for Chief Justice of the NC Supreme Court. The race between Paul Newby and Cheri Beasley is the closest state-wide race in North Carolina history with just a little more than 400 votes separating the candidates.
The North Carolina Board of Elections will identify the specific precinct to be counted before the meeting.
The recount has been requested by the Beasley campaign and 3 percent of the precincts in each county will be identified by the state board. If the recount shows substantial differences with the recently completed recount conducted using ballot reader machines, a full recount of those particular counties can be called.
The meeting will be held in the Dare County Board of Commissioners Room. Due to social distancing, seating for the public will be limited.
