It is the mission of the Dare County Board of Elections to provide fair, open, honest and professionally managed election services to our community. The Board of Elections has the responsibility for safeguarding the will of the people, protecting democracy, and for establishing fairness and equity for all in the process of self-governance. 

The Dare County Board of Elections ensures that elections are free, fair, accurate, convenient and accessible to all voters in Dare County. The Board of Elections is governed by a five-member board appointed by the North Carolina State Board of Elections.

End of Filing Period for Nonpartisan Nov. 5 Elections

The Dare County Board of Elections will conduct nonpartisan elections on Tuesday, November 5, 2019. Candidates seeking election to nonpartisan municipal offices may file a Notice of Candidacy at the office of the Dare County Board of Elections. 

State of filing period - 12 noon, Friday, July 5, 2019
Close of filing period - 12 noon, Friday, July 19, 2019

To be accepted, all Notices of Candidacy, together with the proper filing fee, must be in the possession of the Dare County Board of Elections by 12:00 noon on Friday, July 19, 2019. 

General Candidacy Requirements

  • A registered voter qualified to vote in an election for the office sought
  • At least 21 years of age as of the date of the general election
  • Not serving an active felony sentence, including any period of probation or parole

Municipal candidates will be elected as follows:

DUCK

  • 4 Councilmen (two-year term)
  • Note: At the first Town of Duck Council meeting after the November 5 election, the Council will elect the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore. 

KILL DEVIL HILLS

  • 1 Mayor (two-year term)
  • 2 Commissioners (four-year term)

KITTY HAWK

  • 2 Councilmen (four-year-term)

MANTEO

  • 1 Mayor (two-year term)
  • 3 Commissioners (four-year term) 
  •  

NAGS HEAD

  • 2 Commissioners (four-year term)

SOUTHERN SHORES

  • 3 Councilmen (four-year term)

Voter registration closes at 5:00 PM on Friday, October 11, 2019 for the 2019 nonpartisan municipal elections. The Elections Office is open Monday through Friday (8:30 AM – 12:00 Noon and 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM).  If you have any questions concerning filing or voter registration, please call the Elections Office at 252-475-5630.
